In August 2018, Southside members began seeking God’s direction for their church. Many in the congregation felt that they needed to consider new ways to minister; new ways to reach the Huntsville community. As part of this discernment, Southside elders reached out to the elders at Rivertree to come alongside the Southside body, pray with them, and advise them as they sought God’s will.
Over the following months of meeting and praying, it became clear to the leadership of both churches that God was calling them to a new and very different work. It would be a work that would combine the two churches under the Rivertree banner and leadership; it would take the strengths of both churches with a vision of reaching the medical district as well as a revitalized downtown.
After a long time of discussion, prayer, and fasting, on April 7, 2019, the congregation of Southside voted to join with Rivertree Church; and on April 28, Rivertree’s membership voted to receive Southside’s assets and take leadership of the combined church. After some renovations to the current buildings, the former Southside campus will be relaunched as a downtown campus of Rivertree Church. While this represents the final chapter of the long and faithful work of Southside Baptist Church, it marks the beginning of two fellowships becoming one to advance the Kingdom of God.
